The Lomondgate roundabout on the A82 in Dumbarton, which has been confusing drivers for many years, is being revised this month.
Lane markings are being changed by contractors TranServ ‘to help improve the safety of drivers and traffic flow’.
The roundabout will also be resurfaced, with work planned overnight between 8pm and 6am starting on Monday (February 19) and finishing on February 27.
Vincent Tait, the company’s road safety manager, said: “The new markings system is designed to improve traffic flow and driver safety; with the project developed and scheduled in consultation with Police Scotland, the local authority and key stakeholders.
“We’re working overnight in order to reduce the impact on local commuters and freight traffic.
“Special access arrangements have been made to ensure it’s business as normal for local services around the Lomondgate Roundabout while this work is undertaken.”
Traffic will be diverted via the A813 through the Vale of Leven.
The news was welcomed by local MSP Jackie Baillie, who said: “I am pleased that Transport Scotland is taking action to address the concerns I have raised time and time again on behalf of local motorists.
“Most local drivers have become used to the road layout over time but the A82 is one of Scotland’s busiest trunk roads, with thousands of motorists passing through every day. It is increasingly the case that the road design is blamed for delays and accidents.”
Meanwhile, Transport Scotland has announced it will award a £3.4m contract for ground investigation further north on the A82.
Soil Engineering Geoservices Ltd will be given the contract subject to the mandatory standstill period, with work due to start in March and last for 18 weeks.
Transport Minister Humza Yousaf said: “We remain committed to upgrading the A82 between Tarbet and Inverarnan.
“These ground investigations due to get underway next month will provide the detailed information needed to help inform the development and assessment of the scheme’s design.
“We need to ensure that any future upgrade fits within the area’s outstanding landscape and environment and maintains the renowned beauty of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park.”
