Sponsored walk planned after fishing boat tragedy

A sponsored walk is being held in Helensburgh to help the families of those affected in the Nancy Glen tragedy.

Two members of the fishing boat’s crew were lost when it capsized on Loch Fyne, near Tarbert, on January 18.

Friends and colleagues believe the bodies of Duncan MacDougall and Przemek Krawczyk are trapped inside the wreck.

The Clyde Fishermen’s Association is appealing for financial assistance from the UK and Scottish Governments to bring the men’s bodies back ashore.

A crowdfunding campaign has raised more than £150,000, but the association says that using the money to salvage the wreck would mean there was nothing left for them.

Next Sunday, February 4, families and friends of Helensburgh FC plan to do a two-mile walk in memory of the Nancy Glen fishing Boat and to raise funds to help the families of those affected.

A Justgiving page has been set up, with the message: “The families wish to retrieve their loved ones as soon as possible, which will take great resource. In addition the fishermen have left wives and young children behind.

“Helensburgh FC have forged strong links with both the football and also wider community of Tarbert and we want to help do all we can to assist these families at this time and in the future.

“We ask for support in this task. Please give generously so that these families may lay their men to rest and that their children are supported through the tough times ahead.

“I would ask that as many of you as possible donate anything you can and join us on the walk through Helensburgh.”

The walk is suitable for all ages and will start at the Commodore Hotel at 1pm,going along flat roads and returning there – the hotel is providing free teas and coffees will be available for everyone who takes part.
