News in brief: Community champion awards, MP in stem cell appeal, sports awards deadline

Nominations are now open for this year’s Community Champion Awards, recognising the work carried out at grassroots level across Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.

The event in Gartocharn on November 4 will celebrate the achievements of people who have contribute to the development and enhancement of their communities.

Nominations are now being sought from community interest groups, community development trusts and community councils in this year’s categories – volunteer, rising champion, young volunteer and community organisation.

The closing date is Monday October 23 – go to www.thecommunitypartnership.org.uk

MP Brendan O’Hara joined a cross-party parliamentary event last week to celebrate the number of people who are registered as stem cell donors.

The All Party Parliamentary Group on Stem Cell Transplantation, supported by blood cancer charity and stem cell register Anthony Nolan, held the event to mark the progress made by the transplant community in the past year.

In Argyll and Bute, the number of potential stem cell donors registered with Anthony Nolan is 2,139 – 42% of these donors are male, and the average age is 34.

Mr O’Hara said: “Donating stem cells is straightforward but it could make an enormous difference to someone with no other chance of a cure.

“Across the UK and out of 650 constituencies, Argyll and Bute ranks 15th, which for an area which is largely rural, is exceptional.”
