MoD Police on standby after terror alert increased

Ministry of Defence Police from naval bases on the Clyde may be mobilised after the terrorism threat level was raised to ‘critical’ in response to Monday night’s bombing in Manchester.

More than 900 troops have been deployed across the UK, but a spokesman for HM Naval Base Clyde said none of these were from Faslane and Coulport.

He did confirm though that MoD Police may be involved.

“As part of the wider UK policing response to the increase in the UK National Threat level, the MDP has been requested to activate its mobilisation response plan,” he said.

“Any decision to deploy MOD Police officers as part of the National Armed Policing Strategic Reserve will be made by the National Police Co-ordination Centre.

“Military personnel will provide backfill at MOD Police stations where officers are deployed.”

He added that details of where the police would be drawn from would not be revealed for security reasons, and the only involvement of Royal Navy personnel would be the  Commando Logistic Regiment from RMB Chivenor in Devon.

There has been a visibly increased public presence by Police Scotland and British Transport Police after Monday night’s tragic attack, in which 22 people were killed and 64 injured.

This is the first time for ten years that the threat level has been raised to ‘critical’, meaning that an attack is expected imminently.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said in the Scottish Parliament today that she did not ‘currently envisage’ military personnel being deployed on the streets in Scotland.
