News in brief: New-look bar at Faslane, leisure trust needs board members

Sailors at Faslane have welcomed the reopening of the Junior Rates bar after extensive refurbishment by Captain Craig Mearns, Captain of HMS Neptune.

“This reopening represents many weeks of hard work and effort by a number of people,” he said.

“Particular thanks are due to the Junior Rates Committee, the Base Warrant Officer, WO1 Wayne Burbury, and Babcock Maritime, our industrial partner”.

The facility has been fitted with new wooden flooring, all new furniture and has also been completely redecorated.

Support for the renovation was provided by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, the Rebalancing Lives Fund, the Junior Rates Committee, and industry partner Babcock.

Independent board members are being sought for the trust which will run library, sport and leisure services across Argyll and Bute.

Announced last year as part of £10m cost-cutting measures, the Argyll and Bute Library and Leisure Charitable Trust (CT) is behind schedule, although a council statement this week said it was ‘ progressing well’.

Three unpaid board members are now being recruited to help set up the new charitable company, provide advice and support the trust’s management team.

The council wants applications by March 24 from individuals with:

  • A successful track record in business or community management
  • Experience of working as part of a board or senior management team of a charity or large organisation
  • Knowledge of, and interest in, libraries, sport and/or the leisure sector
  • Relevant business skills that could contribute to the development of the company including financial, legal, property, marketing and ICT.
