Plastics pollution at Garelochhead ‘part of an increasing problem’

An artist has made a passionate appeal for a solution to the problem of plastics polluting Garelochhead.

Leo du Feu specializes in pictures of wildlife but says the Gareloch has fallen victim to a ‘terrible and increasing’ global problem.

A frequent visitor to the area because of family connections, he says that Garelochhead with its surrounding horseshoe of hills is beautiful – but a closer look reveals widespread pollution in the form of large and small pieces of plastic on the shore.

“They come in on the waves, floated to the head of the loch by west coast winds and the tide,” he said.

“It’s not the fault of Garelochhead. The vast majority of these pieces aren’t theirs. They’re all of ours.

“Garelochhead is just one little speck on one big world, this is happening across all of it.”

Beach cleans were held at locations across the area last May, with Argyll and Bute Council providing equipment and refreshments, and Leon urged people to sign the Clean Up Scotland pledge.

A beach clean will be held in Rhu this Sunday, Sunday March 5, and volunteers are welcome – meet at the Rhu village bus stop at 2pm and please bring suitable footwear, and gloves if possible.
