Poison warning for dog owners after storms

Vets have warned pet owners to beware after a deadly plant was spotted on the shoreline.

Hemlock water dropwort, commonly known as poisonous parsnip, can be exposed on beaches after severe storms.

A dog died and another was seriously ill after eating the plant near Cardross three years ago, and yesterday Parklea Veterinary Surgery in Helensburgh said it had been unearthed again in this week’s storms.

“ We have had sightings of it on the Rosneath peninsula and Ardmore Point which means that it will be in other places too. Please be vigilant,” said the surgery’s Facebook page.

“It looks like a bunch of parsnips. Try to make sure your dog does not eat or chew at the tubers (parsnip-like structures).”
