There was a first for the Royal Navy this summer when a French submariner became the first person from that country to qualify in the renowned UK Submarine Command Course, better known as Perisher.
Capitaine de Corvette Thomas Legrand-Amanriche – the French equivalent of a Lieutenant Commander – is no stranger to Faslane, having previously worked there in a post responsible for exercise planning for UK submarines under training.
But to tackle the hugely demanding course in a second language was impressive.
Sandwiched in between formal assessment periods, Thomas (pictured) and his RN Perisher colleagues also took part in Exercise Deep Blue, a submarine exercise where he also successfully evaded a French frigate, with a fierce desire to ‘get one over’ on his fellow countrymen!
This success has propelled Thomas to a probable Executive Officer role on board a French nuclear submarine later this year.
