Prayer vigil for Jamie Taggart on his birthday

A prayer vigil was held last weekend for Jamie Taggart, the botanist who is missing in a remote area of Vietnam.

Rev Christine Murdoch led the service at St Modan’s Church in Rosneath on Sunday – Jamie’s 42nd birthday.

She said the service had been well attended: “As well as having vigil and praying in the church, we also had a two minute silence out in the church grounds.”

Jamie, who runs the internationally renowned Linn Gardens in Cove with his father Dr Jim Taggart, is a retained firefighter with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

He disappeared on November 1 while a plant-hunting expedition in mountains near the town of Sapa in northern Vietnam.

Search parties were initially hampered by freak snowfalls but in London last week Jim Taggart met Luong Van Hao of the Hoang Lien national park who has been co-ordinating the searches and was given an update on the areas now being targeted

Thousands of pounds has been donated to help the search for Jamie, and there will be a fund-raising film screening on Saturday February 8.

Sunshine on Leith will be shown in Cove Burgh Hall by Cove and Kilcreggan Film Society, with all proceeds going to the Jamie search fund.

Admission is £4 and there will be a raffle and tuck shop, or people are welcome to bring their own refreshments; Doors open at 7pm and lights will go down at 7.30pm.

Contributions towards the cost of the search can be made by a cheque made payable to ‘Friends of the Linn’ with the words written on the back, ‘for Jamie’.

The cheque should be sent to Mrs Rie Bellamy, treasurer, Friends of the Linn, Portkil House, Kilcreggan, Helensburgh, G84 0LF.

If a payment is to be made through a bank the details are as follows: Friends of the Linn, Bank of Scotland, Helensburgh branch, sort code 800831, account no 00704064. Again the words ‘for Jamie’ should be used.
