The population of Argyll and Bute has seen the steepest fall of anywhere in Scotland, new figures reveal – and the area also has Scotland’s highest average age.
Scotland’s total population now stands at 5,313,600 – a record high – according to figures released by the General Register Office for Scotland.
But Argyll and Bute’s population fell by 2.2% between 2011 and 2012, well below the second biggest decline – Inverclyde, with 1%.
Edinburgh, East Lothian and Midlothian saw the biggest population increase of 1.2%.
The median age in Argyll and Bute is 47, compared to 41 for Scotland as a whole. Dumfries & Galloway, Scottish Borders and South Ayrshire have a median age of 46, with the cities of Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh the youngest on 36.
With an average of 13 people per square kilometre, Argyll and Bute also has a relatively low population density although the figure is just nine for Eilean Siar and Highland.
Unsurprisingly, Glasgow is the most densely populated area with 3,407 people per square kilometre.
