A wigwam-style camp site and hydroelectric power facility in Kilcreggan are among the ideas being put forward by Argyll and Bute Council planners next week.
Additional sites for development are on the agenda for the council’s Helensburgh and Lomond area committee on Tuesday.
Planners say that land off Millbrae in Kilcreggan, which is currently classed as sensitive countryside, should be able to accommodate the camp site and hydro schemes.
They also support plans to develop an ‘extensive area’ of Fort Road in Kilcreggan, to include 15 houses, holiday accommodation, community farm, woodland walks,
restaurant/café, ‘event space’ and ‘water access’.
The site would be classed as a potential development area and possibly also as an ‘area for action’, says a report to the meeting: “This recognises the potential for community involvement and reflects the role which such an area could have in promoting Kilchreggan (sic) as one of the plan’s Key Rural Settlements.”
The report also suggest extending the area of the former Dobbies site in Helensburgh which can be developed for housing, while the owners of Linn Gardens in Cove have asked for their site to be identified as a primary tourism protection area.
“This is in order to recognise the contribution which the gardens make to local and wider community by attracting tourists to the Peninsula,” says the report.
“The area is currently largely included within the settlement area at Cove. However there may be some merit in including it in a protective designation such as a tourism protection area, particularly as it is also seeking inclusion on Historic Scotland’s list of Gardens and Designed Landscapes.”
Clachan Farm in Rosneath would also be designed as a minor settlement, to ‘allow small scale infill and rounding off development’.
Councillors will be asked on Tuesday to include these sites within the draft Local Development Plan; they would be advertised for 28 days to allow representations to be received.
Unless I am very much mistaken, hydro power requires water – a lot of water – continuously.
