Scottish ports targeted in Operation Kraken

Police Gourock

Police are at ports including Gourock this morning (Friday) in ‘Operation Kraken’ to encourage vigilance on the coastline.

The joint initiative with the National Crime Agency, Police Scotland and the UK Border Force also includes Dunoon, Ardrossan and Stranraer.

A police spokesperson said this was a pre-planned operation and not related to events in Paris earlier this month.

“Please report any suspicious or unusual activity near the coastline,” he added.

“These areas can be used by criminals involved in drugs or serious organised crime.”

Members of the public have been as asked to report:

  • Increased activity at isolated coastal locations or at unusual times of the day
  • Crew who show signs of nervousness or a lack of awareness of maritime protocols and customs
  • Any attempts to signal to vessels offshore or guide them into unusual landfall
  • Strange patterns of payment, such as large amounts of cash

Police ask anyone who has seen something suspicious to call 101.
