‘No options off the table’ as Argyll and Bute Council prepares for painful cuts

‘No options are off the table’, Argyll and Bute Council’s leader has warned as the authority prepares to slash spending by up to 25%.

Faced by a funding gap of £37.5m, the council is expected to cut jobs in its ‘service choices’ programme.

Libraries, child protection and music tuition are just some of the services initially slated for steep cuts last month.

The project board met for the first time yesterday (Tuesday), behind closed doors, and afterwards Dick Walsh, the third man to lead the council since the 2012 elections, said: “The focus of board members is firmly on working together to identify the best options for our communities and the future of Argyll and Bute.

“There are various stages to work through before final decisions are made. At this point no options are off the table.”

The board is made up of eight members of the council’s administration, four from the opposition and two trade union representatives.

The level of service savings is expected to be agreed at a meeting of the policy and resources committee in June, with proposals then being agreed by the council in October.

The board is chaired by Cllr Walsh and the other elected members are Robin Currie, Alex McNaughton, Roddy McCuish, Aileen Morton, Ellen Morton (Elaine Robertson currently   covering), Gary Mulvaney, Len Scoullar, Sandy Taylor, Richard Trail, Iain MacLean and Gordon Blair
